nano leds,,,a real pain!!! maybe not anymore!!!

this has been an obsession of mine since i bought my first nano stuff and couldn t get wires on it,,,,,,,,,i ve been talking to JAMECO ELECTRICS about their super nano products,, but we older guys cant get any wires onto these nano leds. i ve been trying to convince them to bring out a led product line with nano leds WITH WIRES ALREADY ATTACHED!! a very helpful idea i think, that way we can get .05 by .05mm nano leds with a few inches of wire attached, helping us to add resisters and use them for this scale alot easyier. i finaly got the assistant manager to hear me out on this,, and thinks it might be a great idea. but he would like to talk to others about this, so he can see if by adding a few wires, would you guys really buy these small leds. so he gave me his email address, and the more that agree with my idea of adding wires,, and any other suggestions, then he ll bring out a complete nano line of all colors including whites n off whites, to aid us in our endeavers of using these nanos for our cause!! he wont bring the prices up, nor will he put a number quota on how many bought. are you interested?? i know i am!!!! so heres his email addy This email address is being protected from spambots. Jameco does not carry 0402 LED's. When I search it does not show up. When you say Nano LED you mean 0402 right?
Because 0603 is reasonable to solder when compared to 0402. Just make sure the manager you are talking to knows this.

Jameco is a good company, no doubt about it, but their LED line is limited and their prices are not the best. There are literally dozens of other sources for 0402s with a great range of product.

If you want to take the next step to "true" nano, then you can go for 0201s.

If you don't want to or can't solder to a small smd led, you can get some solder paste, dip the end of the wire in it, put the end of the wire to the side of the led, then heat it with hot air.

Another good way is to glue the led with a small drop of glue to some surface (like thick paper), hold the wire down next to it with some weight and this way it is possible to easily solder them with a needle head iron. Then a hobby knife can be used to cut off the led from the paper and cut off one end of the wire. (this technique can be used to solder multiple leds in parallel, like a ladder)

This is the technique I use, except I CA them to a piece of stainless steel. It makes it much easier to remove the LEDs after soldering. They pop off cleanly.
