Got Snow in the Pass? was created by stonysmith
At the 2012 NZSC, we visited the Colorado Railroad Museum, and I was able to get a good set of reference photographs for C&S 99201 Rotary Snow Plow.

Now available for purchase: shpws.me/kXDS

The base is a separate peice so that you can add glass to the windows.
I didn't even attempt doing the ladders.. those will have to be added separately.

Cool Stony. What do you put it on....just a pair of regular trucks? I know several who need to add this to their roster.
Oh, and a PS of sorts. We're working on a show shed that would compliment this plow.

Yes, just regular (non coupler) trucks.
The proto units were unpowered - had to have a locomotive behind them pushing.

Everyone who wants one, contact me for a special price on non coupler trucks.

And Mike, I was thinking of you when I saw Stony's creation. I knew you would be interested.
On my new end module I have a siding and it will have the shed that we are making, so I guess it will be considered old?
After all, winter is a coming.

As for locomotive power to push one of these. For those that like to model an exactly accurate railroad, one could “assume” any loco in the fleet might have been called upon to be a pusher. However that’s not exactly a very good way to do things. With some railroads, there are locos that might not ever have gotten in to the region, and so they would never get called upon in the first place. It would be nice to know which locos, for specific RRs, took on the job of pushing a rotary snow plow. Does anyone know of any lists of combinations of rotary snow plows/locos? And the list could be quite long as rotaries were in production from 1885 until 1950 and used at least until 1988. (The last "homebuilt" Lesley type was built in 1971.)

Although they don't have pushers listed, I've found two lists of rotaries (and I'll bet there are alot more). I have no idea how complete (or accurate) these are;

To confirm the statement that "Stony Can't Paint".. I offer this evidence of the crime.

First I cleaned the model with Bestine.. leaving this white finish.

Then for the crime:

Well forgive me for being blind, near sighted, and cross eyed, but just exactly what is so bad about your paint job? Were you trying to paint it yellow with green spots? If so, then yes, I'd say you screwed it up royally.

It doesn't look all that bad to me either. Maybe a better lit photo would reveal the problems.

Here is a cross-section of the plow. You can see that there is a "nub" that is accessable from inside the body, along with slot that should accomodate a motor shaft of some kind.

The trouble here is finding a motor that is slow enough, along with fashioning a mount for it. For now, any such motor would be 'floating'. I am open to altering the design, but I don't know what to select.

Stony, Motor for the blades? Will you have snow as well? I know little about motors and electrics and such, but for videos or the blurred still camera shot could you not use some sort of voltage regulator on something? How about on those few times you may run the propellers maybe a device that would slow the props down. Are toothed gears a possibility? Jim

I can now confirm: the most recent version of this model DOES allow the blade to spin!
Just got my reprint today, and it works fine. I made the "nub" inside quite a bit longer than the picture above so it should be easier to mount a motor to it.

Now, to find a motor.

If such a motor as needed, using low DC voltage can be found, then couldn't one use a small button battery with a tiny micro switch or reed switch of some sort mounted on the bottom of the frame to power the blades during short running sessions? Some smart electronic type guy could likely design a circuit that would take the voltage down to manageable RPMs.

Somewhere in this big old world there has to be a as yet undiscovered tiny slow rotating motor that would fit the bill.

The effect would be quite captivating, but without snow to blow around it would look a bit out of place. Still, a novel effect.
