Scratch Building Contest was created by Socalz44
Hi all, This is the 'official' notice of the Scratch Building Contest. Rules: 1. No more than 20% parts manufactured by an entity other than you. 2. Any amount commercial track is allowed and does not count in the 20%. 3. Two photos maximum to show off your work. 4. Commercial ground covers, paint, chalk and other weathering items are allowed and do not count in the 20%. 5. Your entry is not required to be set in a diorama type scene. On a base, possibly, with your item is all we need. 6. For the purposes of this contest, any entry depicting a figure, vehicle, piece of hardware, building or activity (or multiples of these) is acceptable. 7. Judging will be a poll of all members. 8. Prizes to be announce later, 1st, 2nd, 3rd at least. Winners choose prize in descending order. 9.Entries will be accepted in this thread on or after May 10, 2010 and contest will close on June 5, 2010.
Hopefully entries will consist of recent work and not something from the display case done years ago. This is not a rule, just a suggestion. Good luck to all, Jim CCRR:cheer:

OK....I'll play.
Here is an abandoned station built entirely out of index card. The only commercial items would be the foliage and paint.

Ok Jim, I'll just see what happens.
This D&RGW 56108 gondola in completely build up from Evergreen strips and sheet, according pictures from the internet. It is hand painted with Humbrol 33 black. Home made decals, printed with an old HP BW laser printer. Home made real rust. All covered with Microscale flat. Detail parts were given by Lajos. (thanks again!) Trucks are MTL, since I like hands free switching. The load is borrowed from my gold fish.

/Frank

My Entry is this crudely painted copy of a cast resin Cat D11R Dozer that was first made by gluing styrene together and then filing and cutting away from it to make the masters from which this dozer was molded and cast.

The walls are lasered - but only the shelf design. Size, windows etc I did by my own...

Here is the first of three entries i have for the contest. The three items are all made of wood and are 100 percent scratch built. I had a few all styrene pieces that i didnt get done on time. There is always next time. This item is a snowshed that would be used by the railroads in areas that would have alot of drifting in the winter like in low rolling hills. These were widely used across the contry in the early days of railroads

More to come!

I had hoped to have two entries but work got in the way. This is a Dupont 11500 Gall tank car. The tank is a home-made resin casting on a plywood chassis, rails and ladders are cut from 0.25" polycarbonate sheet. Decals were printed on an inkjet printer and need work. Trucks and couplers are AZL.

The second item im entering is a four track coal loadout for a hillside mine. The other coal chute is used for truck loading. I was contacted today from a very nice and concerned member that i still had time to stain or paint my entries so people will not vote for me thinking that the items are not finished. Sense i do not have a layout yet i have not decided what to finish them with yet but all three are finished. I found this design for the coal tower out of an old model train magizine.i had alot of fun doing this one.

This all wood trestle is 29 Inches long,11 inches tall and is 5 1/2 inches at the base. This is a tressle that was built in Washington State by a lumber company so they could get to the groves of trees they needed. It is very different with the inverted V built in to span the river below. My model has over 1500 pieces that were measured, cut and glued together a piece at a time.I guessed i have over 100 hours to get this one done. This bridge will be left in its raw wood look because it was built that way in real life. The lumber company built this as a temporary bridge that only needed to last a few years so they did not seal the wood to make it last longer. The only parts that are not on the bridge are the cross braces at the bottom of the bents. I left those off till i have the bridge installed.
I Love doing wood trestles.
Enjoy!
