Questions to anyone who owns a Micro-Trains SD40-2 was created by proud2bnokie
I do not own an MTL SD40-2 yet. I own only four-axle power.
I just finished custom painting a GP35 and GP9, and found that painting, decorating and installing the metal etched railings was a challenge (to do it right), but I'm very pleased with the results. I really like the metal etched railings.
But when looking at photos of the SD40-2, it is difficult for me to determine by the photos, but it appears that Micro-Trains has gone to using colored delrin for the hand railings. Is this correct?
Some photos show that side and front railings are crooked? Is alignment an issue on these? Or do your railings look straight?
How are they attached to the walkways?
I appreciate your input. This will help me determine what to purchase on future painting projects.
(Side note: I've custom painted many G, HO and N engines over the past 28 years. Z is the most difficult. I use Floquil Enamels which are OK, but getting the paint thin enough to keep shell details sharp, but thick enough for proper color richness is a delicate balance. Lining up the microscopic decals is fun too. Anyone who has painted a Z Scale locomotive knows what I am talking about!)

Alignment is an issue, even a new one out of the box is not perfect. So it's a bit tricky to get those plastic railings back in place after painting, they are just clip-in. They look more realistic, but I prefer metal as long as it's stainless steel, not brass.
But I found after a while even crooked plastic railings are getting somehow in a better shape...So you have to make up your own mind

Thanks Gerd. I'm assuming that you use flex paint. Can you recommend a brand of paint? I've stayed away from painting Delrin over the years.

I use standard Floquil or Pollyscale paint, but prime with some stuff from Holt used to prime spoiler, bumper and other plastic stuff on cars. So this makes the Floquil/Pollyscale sticky to the railings

In the US you can buy Dupli Color brand Adhesion Promotor to prime MTL handrails with. I have not tried it yet, but I bought a can, after Joe D'Amato posted that he primed some SD40-2 handrails with it, then painted, and tied the handrails in knots, and the paint did not flake off.
