Description
I started over using pink Styrofoam, I find is harder to shape but not as messy. Fred, this is the actual size of the ore loader trucks, if I go with the iron ore mine. Decisions, decisions.

- No wonder it keep derailing.0
- Yow! The track is supposed to go on the bridge not the other way round!
Unsigned0
- Thanks Fred, I know I'll love it because I sculpt some myself. I will be making Model Railroading Stuff with it and maybe sell a few in the future. It's all part of my train budget, choices we make. ;-)0
- They are FUN! and you can make all kinds of interesting shapes.
I carve eagles and other nautical things in wood. One day I broke out the foam cutter and made my ship's emblem out of foam. It was fast and easy, and once painted up, looked real nice. The only thing... it was very light-- sorta seemed cheap.. if you know what I mean- I like the heft of wood. But if you don't touch it. it looks like a wood carving.
Fred
I'll try to get a pictutre in JUST FOR FUN0
- Just as well, it's a done deal. :-)0
- Nope- not gunna do it -- it's gutta be all your fault.;-)0
- Fred, the Hot Wire basic is 40 bucks, but my soldering iron does the same thing, I would purchase the full package the Pro model so I could make things to sell after. I think I am going to do it. Actually have the credit card sitting on the desk. :-) I look at it as a future investment. So give me that nudge, you do so well. LOL0
- Woaw.. There must be a cheaper model- I can't remember paying that much.. But I guess the bucks were bigger way back then.
Fred0
- Beverly, I use Tacky Glue (White Glue) to glue the foam together. The brown stuff is just a base coat over the foam of Raw Sienna Acrylic paint, thinned about 1 part paint to 4 parts water, I don't measure I just put a bit of water and tap the brush in some paint and mix em. I keep it thin, You can add as many coats as you want this way.

By using different colors you can create very nice coverings, mostly greens, browns, grays, a thin black wash in places will darken areas, As white will lighten them a bit. Again, thin is the keyword here.

I use saws, knives, Dremel bits, sand paper on sticks and a battery operated soldering iron (with rechargeable batteries) to do the shaping. It works just like a Hot Wire but only cuts with the tip, so it is nice for final shaping.

If I purchased a Hot Wire I would want the Pro 4 setup and that is 175 bucks, so I need to consider it carefully. Exchange rate, 13% HST tax and shipping. I am managing without it, so a new engine or a Hot Wire?0
- Terry,

I have one of those foam heat cutters. It works quite well, but you have to let the heat do the cutting at its own speed and please be careful of the fumes as already mentioned. What did you use to glue the layers of foam together? And what is that brown stuff on top of your foam?0
- Thanks Bob, I'll look into them, they may do the job.0
- MZZ makes a 2 large dump trucks suitable for a strip mine scene. They aren't the GIANT mine trucks but they are large and available in Z scale. I would love to see an Iron ore mine. I think you should go for it!
They are sold by Zundmeer of Germany. I have orderd from them a couple of times via email. Shipping takes about 3 weeks but, they are an upstanding company to deal with.
bh0
- Fred, thanks, I'll look into one.0
- Terry- use a "Hot Wire" from Hot Wire Foam Factory. It comes with several different wires. It cuts thru the foam with heat and sort of seals it as it cuts. It can also be used to scribe rocks, etc. And it's fun! clean, but be careful of fumes. I made that same truck from the printout- Huge!!
Fred0
