this picture reminds me of a movie with Buster Keaton: The General I haven't seen the complete movie, but there is part that I saw on YouTube . That was when he climbed around on the engine and finally fired the mortar...


...and why is it that I see much more on the German Wikipedia version then on the English one...

Prior to the Civil War the United States did not have a medal HONORING actions Above and Beyond the call of duty. As the war progressed Congress passed a law recognizing such valor. The first to recieve it were the band of UNION infiltrators well behind enemy lines, that made ANDREW'S Raid. They stole the locomotive GENERAL (LEFT) in Georgia- and hoped to reach friendly lines in Tennessee, all the while cutting telegraph lines, damaging rails and bridges. The rebels chased General backwards in the loco TEXAS (RIGHT). All the raiders were caught but this daring feat raised the moral in the NORTH and caused embarrasment to the SOUTH. Several RAIDERS were hung, some escaped prison, still others were traded for southern prisoners.
AND THAT"S THE WAY IT IS.

Like I said I was drinking liquid refreshment last night, yes, I was at home. I've relinquished my rights to the question.

Uwe the only thing I can think of was the B&O electrifying the tunnel to their main station at Mount Royal because the steamers created too much smoke when accelerating out of the underground station. The time period I would have to say was between 1900 to 1908. That's my guess.

not UK. I don't know about the number of tunnels in the UK, but I firmly believe there more where this loco comes from. Besides the reason has nothing to do with tunnels.

My knowledge of Euro trains is drizzmaly short-- The bumpers look like German design and I'm equally schtumpped by steam AND electric.- Guess 1920's

I must say that I've never seen the steam/catenary combo before but I would guess it is for Switzerland/Austria area based on your tunnel aplenty clue. And I would also guess that it is around 1910 to 1915 since the other years have pretty much been eliminated Maybe it was back when they were inventing electric trains and using electricity on steep grades was maybe more efficient than chugging a steam loco with a heavy load up those grades. Man, I have got to stop these guessing games. It shows my lack of railroad knowledge!
