Stony,

OUTSTANDING!!! A total first in Z scale! Well done. A few questions:

1. What trucks and couplers does it use or is it made to fit over another already produced Z scale car?

2. Does it come with hooks for the end of the crane?

3. Will it come with the cables or instructions on how to connect cables even if they are static?

Yours,

John

Fred beat me to the posting:

Shapeways Link: Bucyrus WB150 Crane

There are bolsters built in such that you can use standard MTL trucks - without couplers.

Both hooks are included.. they're attached to sprues on the front porch of the crane.
It's up to you to add cable (thread) to the pulleys. Use your imagination as to how you want them wired up.

If I got all the tolerances correct, the cab will rotate, and the boom will pivot up/down. The pulley arms for the cables should also be able to change angles so that you can pick the angle of the arm you want. The main gears and cable spools are decorative only.. they do NOT operate.

I also removed the boiler inside the back room of the cab. You couldn't really see it in there anyway, and it leaves extra room in there for you to add some lead for counterbalance weight if the thing has a tenancy to tip over.

I am open to suggestions as to what to do for couplers. The MTL 905 coupler is just so huge that it'll take up half of the base.. I'd like another option.

A bit of history: I first started working on this model back in May of 2011 - I had the coarse body worked out, and I was trying to figure out what to do to make the pulleys look right. Then, the next week, FUD came out and resolved the issue. The biggest challenge was finding proto photos that gave me enough views at the right angle to be able to create something that looked right.

This great. :woohoo: Did you consider trucks with couplers? Will you make a 4 or 5 pack?

The "skirt" in front and back stick down so far that you can't do truck-mounted couplers.

I tried to (mostly) follow this for the prototype:

How bout a rectangular hole for the coupler to fit thru and allow free sideway action.
We all have to comprimise sometimes-- I submit--"Yes Dear"

I think you will have to either make some kind of build in coupler box, that mimics a 905, but people would have to put in the tiny fumbly parts and springs themselves, or you will just have to make a big square hole where you can install the 905. On the real crane there is some "stuff" jutting out on the ends of the cars, and it would be no more distracting than any other z scale car that is out there.
For those who actually want to run the car, wouldn´t you be putting it in the middle of a work train so you wont really see the ends?
For those who want to super detail this car (adding BLMA grab irons , lights, horns rigging and other thingies) it would be easy to add the end skirts, as they are flat and can be made out of real thin polystyrene or wood or paper. I do not know how much room you have on the end and middle for the stabilizing I beams, but I would rather see a rectangular hole so I could perhaps slip in a tiny brass I beam..
Perhaps you could make different version? One that is static and detailed, and one that would use MTL or other wheels and coupler?
People who buy this car must realize it is coming from Shapeways and will not have rigging, thread, decals, couplers, wheels, paint, ect ect. Perhaps this is a start of another cottage industry where a 3rd party could super-detail them and sell them ready to run?
But for 16 Euro, its a good deal, that is not much more than what it would cost me for a funky little caboose.

I just got mine--3-6-12-- the detail is amazing and would satisfy any divit counter.. I can imagine a lot of uses for the crane- certainly as is, on the rails, but also on a barge :) to build docks, or retrieving sunken boats or dredging ( read clamshell bucket ), or on a pedistal, trackside, to load scrap metal in gondolas ( read magnet ) or loading those new cement containers, or mounted on an a warehouse that stradles a dock- to load small ships. Or just a derelict in a forgotten junk yard. Very nice job Mr. Smiff. Oh- And I hear you are running out of projects-- So everyone send Stony your suggestions and keep twisting.

And NSM has just the flat deck barge that you could put that crane on! They're currently available at Zscalemonster: www.zscalemonster.com/nansenstreetmodels/nsm-053.jpg :woohoo:
