The crowds were at times heavy.
Robert Ray's superb fire lookout and natural sunlight on the Castle Crags rest stop area.
Tomorrow a picture to make you weak in the knees........I'll get in trouble with Karin for this one, but hey, I just shoot what I see. Stay tuned.

- Johnathan,<br />I'm sure that I'll find something when I finally sit down to move some earth and rocks and change the face of the scenery. Would love to be doing it now, but this house renovation and upcoming move is going to kick my butt several times over.<br /><br />Modeling is more fun than remodeling....:sad:0
- Spent two houes this morning looking for pics of rest areas.Found all kinds of pics but nothing useful to you or me. :sad:0
- No no no. you got it all wrong Fred......if you're going to put that outhouse on an overlook, then it needs to be somewhere in the vicinity of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave......maybe over the congress or senate.<br /><br />I am going to reshape the hillside and extend it and make the viewing area as I mentioned above. I think that would be a neat bit of creative landscaping.0
- Actually the outhouses should be directly over the tree hugger's hiking path.;-)0
- Loren, I would consider the 'suggestions' for a future project and Fred you were this close > < to getting gonged.0
- I betcha I get GONGED for that!!0
- Loren- Rather than adding tons of rock, flora and fona- whatever ? I saw that the Grand Canyon just opened an overlook that is sort of like a dock- with rails- that is cantelievered out over the canyon walls and it's sort of like "Flying" over the canyon. Likewize- an out house could be similar cantilivered, and there would be no reason for servicing- ;-) - just doing what the bears and the fish doo....just make sure there is no tree huggers walking path directly underneath. ;-)0
- The only reason I have more time than you is I can't find a sitdown job.If I could I would definately have one.I will look and see if I can find some rest stop pictures. We could call the restroom part the Catt box series.;-)0
- PS. Do me a favor Johnathan since you seem to have more spare time than me......find me a neat picture of a good looking restroom and I'll make it with the laser. Maybe we can start a new kit called "Rest Stop" complete with small trailer for coffee, with picnic tables, trash cans, restrooms and info center. They are popular along I-5 here in Oregon. Recently in Oregon the state has closed down several popular rest stops in areas that leave motorists driving much longer distances before they can find a potty stop. I think we will be seeing more folks emerging from the bushes along the highway because of that. <br />Hey, when you gotta go you gotta go.0
- Yes, that is a possibility, but I doubt the highway dept would spend money on an overlook especially in this economy.....or was it done years ago when we were flush with state funds?<br /><br />The rest stop is in kind of a bad spot with limited visibility when crossing the road to get to the other side.<br />No, you don't have to be a chicken to cross the road.....just quick. Squawk ;-)<br /><br />Another option is just to extend the hillside out about an inch and make a walk way between the parked cars and a picnic area with the rest room and tables. Hey, I like that idea so when I find some spare time, (wish me luck), I'll add a few tons of rocks, brush and public facilities. Great idea Johnathan. <br /><br />Shall I call it Johnathan's Lookout? Seems appropriate enough. Or Johnathan's Landing?<br />Definitely need some safety signs posted along the way.0
- Well you did ask for suggestions and the scenic over look could go in front of the white (?) and maroon cars and could be braced off the mountain side with steel beams or a concrete abutment to support it.0
- PS. Really no room for a overlook unless I assist mother nature and somehow 'magically' add some more mountain side to that area. I've heard tell of rocks growing all by themselves....0
- Ah yes, the special railing as you show in that picture Johnathan. This is a job for 'super laser' It would be built in several sections to get the 3 dimensional aspect. The only trouble is that tearing the old siding off could and may compromise the road bed surface of the highway. I forget how I constructed the bridge itself, but it seems I'd have to carefully trim away all the vertical down to the road surface and then just glue the new siding onto the surface. Not a project to be taken carelessly, that's for sure.<br /><br />As I look at the picture of the railing I say to myself.....'yes, it can be done, but just not today'<br /><br />I'll put that on my to do list. Thanks Johnathan. Your idea takes the cake.0
- A senic overlook would be cool too, probly just to the left of the road bridge. Here's a link to the Rix site showing the bridge railings.www.rixproducts.com/6280103.htmCould possibly use the same railings on the overlook.(did I mention I could use some too?;-) )0
- Loren- I happen to agree with catt. I think the bridge would look a lot better with open cement railings- can't discribe in words- sort of like short pillers with a cement rail as top. I don't like the new bridges where I can't look thru the rail and see the tracks- valley, river, or in my area the Bay. But that is just me! hard to improve upon purrfection. ;-)0
- Johnathan, Got a picture of what you describe? There isn't much room between the tracks since they are near the end of the module interface. Simple pillar abutments?<br /><br />Zak, you trying to get a wandering pedestrian killed or something?0
- I think abutments would make a huge difference. You might also have someone standing one the bridge since there are so many cars parked near it.0
- Suggestions? Hard to improve on that but here's my quarters worth.Replace the side railings on the bridge with some from the 50's era (like the Pikestuff highway bridge) Concrette footings/abutments to support the ends, and maybe a concrette or steel support tower about the middle (not sure about the tower as I can not see the track placement.0
- I love what natural sunlight does to pictures. I still want to put a small bathroom somewhere in that scene. May have to ask a couple of folks to move their vehicles.<br /><br />I'm also open to suggestions for making the bridge look a bit better. Any ideas on what kind of support to add?0
